Three-dimensional conjugated systems with reduced S-T gap
The main scientific objective of ESR14 consists of the design, synthesis and the electrochemical and optical characterizations of new molecular materials with applications in organic photovoltaics (OPV). These novel electron-donor or electron-acceptor materials will exhibit a 3D structure. Their synthesis and characterization require a training in heterocyclic chemistry and various analytical techniques, respectively. Thereafter, the student will learn how to carry out the fabrication of organic solar cells to assess the photovoltaic potential of their new organic materials. This part of the project will be carried out at the University of Angers (UA) under the daily supervision of Dr. Philippe Blanchard and Dr. C. Cabanetos. Promising materials will be synthesized in relatively large quantity and transferred to our colleagues from the SEPOMO consortium for in depth photophysical characterizations and optimization of organic solar cells.
In parallel, for a better understanding of structure-property relationships, a specific training in Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations is planned during a secondment at the University of Mons under the supervision of Pr. D. Beljonne (co-supervisor). This work will allow us to evaluate the energy levels of the frontier orbitals of the targeted molecules as well as their singlet-triplet gap.

Pablo Simon Marques
Pablo Simon got his BSc Degree in Chemistry from the University of Zaragoza (Spain) in 2016. He moved on studying a Master in Organic Chemistry in the Autonomous University of Madrid (2017), where his MSc thesis was focused on the synthesis of porphyrins and their applications in solar cells. In October 2018 he joined the Lineal Conjugated Systems group at MOLTECH-Anjou from the University of Angers (France) to obtain his PhD under the supervision of Philippe Blanchard and Clement Cabanetos. His PhD thesis is focused on the synthesis and characterization of π-conjugated systems for the fabrication of organic solar cells. Pablo is currently employed as a post-doctoral researcher at Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (DE)
